Most people start out on LinkedIn with a “I have to be on this” attitude and don’t see it as the incredibly powerful and useful social media tool that it is.

I’ve parted ways with Yatter

So as some of you already know, for a while over the latter part of 2017 and the beginning of this year I was working with Yatter, a new collaborative social media scheduler that has been developed in Glasgow.

Some of you may also have received the announcement email from when my profile updated on LinkedIn and for those of you who have sent their congratulations on my new post, I am humbled and thank you all.

Unfortunately, shortly after the announcement of my involvement became public, it became clear that despite being brought on to bring a fresh approach to their marketing, the team were uncomfortable with me working differently to the way they were used to, the relationships became sour and I decided I had to leave.

This wasn’t a decision I took lightly, the product is superb and those who know me know that I love seeing new businesses thrive! That’s why I love doing what I do.

I think it’s important to recognise that toxic environments don’t work for anyone, and at a time where the team needs to be pulling together, our differences were only causing division.

Yes, it’s disappointing to leave after so short a time, but no, I don’t regret parting when I did. It wasn’t going to work and it’s better to recognise that early on and save the big complicated mess at the end.

Yatter is a superb system and I wish those still involved all the very best for the future (if you would benefit from using a scheduler then check it out, I highly recommend it)

We’ve started a YouTube Channel!

Yes, that’s me! and yes, I am a total poser!

But that’s actually a GOOD THING because we have started a YouTube Channel. Whoohoo!

What I have been finding recently is that different people ask me the same questions, how to set things up? why do one thing and not the other? and often times when I’m speaking to folks it turns out that they have been scared to ask for fear of looking foolish or it being a stupid question.

IT’S NOT, ask away!!!

I am THE QUEEN of “stupid” questions!

Apart from that one time when we sat in a Nintendo briefing and a member of staff asked what to do with the DS if it ran out of battery and we all sat and rolled our eyes as the trainer tried to sensitively tell her to charge it up without adding “you moron” to the end of his sentence. That was a stupid question. But no, on this occasion it wasn’t me.

So from now on, When I get asked a question, we’re going to make a video about it. Because you know what? If you’re wondering it, then other people will be as well! and we might as well be open about it. If I don’t know how to do something, I’ll find out. So we’re all learning together!

Your most memorable job?

What’s your most memorable job been?

Has it been memorable because you hated it or because you loved it?

Over the years I have had some pretty interesting jobs and got to work with tremendous people. People who I would never have been able to come into contact with had it not been for some obscure demand from a client or some desperate to impress the boss, new graduate who thought up the wackiest idea ever to get attention.

Usually managed to get the wrong sort of attention as wacky ideas tend to be a logistical nightmare. Just saying!

Anyhoo, the other day I was asked what my favourite job was? The asker probably assuming I would say that working for Nintendo and all their cool games was my fav, or perhaps running events with Alcohol brands?

Nope. These were cool jobs and I learned a lot and had a crazy amount of fun, but my favourite stands alone!

I remember the phone-call…

Hi, Clare, we’ve had a last minute cancellation and wondered if you could step in?

Sure, what’s it for?

It’s for blood donation. (a subject I happen to feel passionate about, so they had me!)

Cool, I’ll do it. Send over the details.

I was dressed as a blood drop. It wasn’t glamourous. But it was incredible fun. I was there to have my photograph taken with delegates of a blood technology conference. So not blood donation at all.

The opening evening had a ceilidh, I was the main attraction and danced about as a crazy blood-drop. The following days I turned up and people came over to get their pictures taken with me. My minder took me around the conference and got to have pictures with scientists and developers and engineers.

At the end of the conference week I got a thank you card from the team and we took pictures of us all together. (I’m in red at the back)

That one idea, which was quite a simple one, turned a run-of-the-mill meeting of scientists at seminars into a memorable and enjoyable few days. It also made Roche stand out amongst the crowds of other exhibitors as everyone knew they were there and where to find them. Clever huh!

So next time you are planning an event or a seminar or even a meeting, think about how you can make it memorable and engaging. Be approachable and people will come to you and feel their time is appreciated. It doesn’t need to be a costume character, take photos as you go around, thank the attendees for coming, put on a speaker, ask for opinions. Make it your own and people will come back!
